Hi, i have a friend with a mac mini who is finding that it keeps crashing sometimes at boot, sometimes when using, i believe that this is a hardware issue, but was wondering if someone else could tell from the following error log what is causing the issue?

Many thanks :)

It looks to me that the bluetooth or USB controller is at fault. You will need to stop by an Apple store and have it looked at because this will require a logic board replacement (I hope your friend has AppleCare as logic boards are expensive).

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the mac mini is over 12 months old and without apple care :(

You can still have it looked at by Apple and have them quote you the cost of repairs. It could be a simple fix, but you won't know until you go.

Have you tried reinstalling Mac OSX? This will really prove if this is a hardware or software problem.

I have asked them to do this but from what i can tell (they may be doing it wrong) the kernel panic happens when booting into the boot disk software also, so as far as i can tell i don't think they are able to re-install.

Has your friend done a hardware test? Boot from the install DVD and hold down the D key. Make sure ONLY the mouse, keyboard and monitor is connected to the mac mini or you can get false positives.

Hi, they ran the diagnostics disk and it returned the following error:

4MEM/4/4000000:00180044 Pass Number 1

Pretty much confirms that it is a hardware issue, i am hoping that this suggests that a RAM stick is broken, as this is much cheaper to replace that a logic board, what's your thoughts?

Cheers

Hi all, just to give an update i replaced out the memory in the mac mini and all appears well.

Thanks to all that provided input :)
