Hi, I have a Mac Mini late 2014, Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8 GB. I would like to upgrade it to more memory as it always seems to get close to the limit of 8GB and slows down. I keep the Activity Monitor open and when I see the Memory is getting high I Force Quit something, usually something called "trusted". The kernel_task usually takes close to 1 GB itself. When I went to the Apple Store they said they cannot add memory and it was working fine. I really think adding more memory would help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

The Late 2014 refresh was a downgrade from the Late 2012 for a couple different reasons. One of them was Apple's disastrous decision to solder in the RAM for seemingly no reason. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to upgrade the RAM without getting an entirely new logic board or Mac mini.

Important question:
What kind of DRIVE is in the 2014 Mini?
THAT'S what could be "slowing it down".

Let us know the answer, and we might be able to give advice on how to "speed things up".

IF it's a platter-based drive, the fastest, easiest, cheapest, safest way to make it faster is to buy an EXTERNAL USB3 SSD, plug that in, and set it up to become the boot drive.

I think what you need is the download an app from the app store called "memory diag". This application runs in the background and is a memory management software. A pretty good one as it manages and releases unused memory after the program quits through what it's called memory recycling. It's useful for computers with limited memory that can't be upgraded like yours. Also helps is to pair it with a fast SSD drive with some drive cache so when the Mini pages the drive as the memory management app recycles the memory to release more, you won't notice any hiccups. It's currently on my Mini 2011 with 8Gb as well as with my Macbook Air and it helps run memory hog programs that benefit 16Gb of RAM, but because the Mini is 2011 and it's old, I don't plan on sinking in more money into more ram.
