Hi!
Just bought a base model Mac Mini M2 for some basic tasks, and I have it plugged into my Apple Studio Display.
It's the first Desktop Mac I own, so I wonder, is it normal to have the fan always on, although dead silent at around 1700 RPM and with a temperature of 40-42 degrees celsius?
Thanks in advance for your input.

What's your ambient room temp?

The fan is always on at ~1700 RPM on my M2. It was running 38°-39°C in the winter but currently is running about 44-45°C with the ambient temp around 30.5°C. My 2012 ran at 58-62°C and was still going strong when I retired it in March. These are CPU temps.

Great to know this is normal.
As I said, it's my first Mac desktop and I had no idea.
One other thing: do you usually turn the Mini off when not using, or overnight, or of you use it as a laptop, putting it just in sleep mode?

Sleep. I set the top right "hot corner" to sleep the display so I just flick the cursor to the top right and the screen turns off, followed by the Mini entering sleep mode at some point.

I am pretty impressed with this Mini.
One thing though I wish it would be better designed: the rubber base.
The Mini is a bit on the lightweight, and adding that to the fact the rubber base is not that grippy, the lisghtest touch on the cables on its back makes it to move very easily...
