Celeron M 400 (a derivative of Core Solo) will launch in Q2.

Only the Celeron M line is at the prices needed for these Macs.

I kinda doubt that the low-end macs will use Celerons. You say that in terms of pricing, the Celeron is the only chip that makes sense.

I did a little research and got the following costs.

1. T1300 Core Solo (1.67 Ghz/667 mhz) - $209
2. T2300 Core Duo (1.67 Ghz/667 mhz) - $241
3. 380 Celeron M (1.6 Ghz/400 mhz) - $134

4. Freescale 7447A (1.42 Ghz/167 mhz) - $473

I'm guessing that Apple can get G4s at less than $473, but probably nowhere near the $134 price of the Celeron. So with the pricing disparity between the G4 and the Intel chips, I think Apple could afford to put the T2300 Duo chip in the new iBooks and Mac minis. Although, I'm betting that they go with the T1300 to maintain a spec gap between the "consumer" and "professional" Macs.

Here are the links where I got the pricing.

wow 473 bucks I wonder how much that price is inflated and how much apple actually pays for a g4 chip. I really hope they go with the duo chip for the ibook.

I somehow suspect that, following what has always happened with PBs and iBooks, the MBP will get a bump to a faster Core Duo, and the iBook will use the one or two Core Duo speeds just below the ultraportable MBP-line offering. The Celeron-M is a stripped down Core Solo, right? I somehow don't think we're going to see that in a Mac.

I actually think they will both get the Duo because Merom will be coming out late summer (or so) and that can be in the new MBP, therefore making a bigger gap between product lines.

I would wonder why they seem to be waiting for the solos to come out for the ibook/mini launch. Could be R&D time, but seems logical to me.

- Merom was pushed to Q4
- Core Solo is already out.

Please god let it be a core solo at least. If it is a celeron I will not buy it, period. I will buy a dell instead. Celeron is the biggest pile of **** known to man. I know this version of the celeron should be way better than previous versions but apple please give me a core solo.

The first desktop Celeron was a pile of ****. The Celeron M wasn't very different from the Pentium M. If the Celeron M 400 isn't much different from the Core Solo then I'm all for it.

The Core Duo has 2 MiB of cache, so that is "more or less 1 MiB per core".
The Core Solo still has 2 MiB of cache. If more or less 1 MiB is enough for a core in a Duo,
why not making some interesting cost savings (not like disabling a core) and reduce to 1 MiB of cache? => Celeron M

The only thing you could really argue about is the crippled FSB. But Celeron M has 3 times the FSB of the iBook and twice the cache, so saying Celeron M is crap is just whining.

If Apple puts a Core Solo it will be doing a disservice both to itself and its customers. For only $30 more, they can put a Duo.

In April, they will launch the following Celeron M Yonahs (1 MB cache):

420: 1.6 GHz
430: 1.73 GHz

Later, there will be the 410 (1.46 GHz), but I guess that doesn't matter.

We're gonna end up with slower than PPC speeds at this rate! Second-hand 15' 1.67GHz G4 anyone?!

The iBooks only run at 1.33 and 1.42 GHz

A 1.67 GHz PowerBook should be slower than a 1.6 GHz Celeron M anyway. (But I guess not for Altivec)
Although Yonah has a 14-stage pipeline compared to only 7 for G4. But the branch prediction should be better...
