If I will be using a mini as a media server, how much better will the 09 mini be versus a previous model. I'm trying to figure out if saving around $200 is worth it. If you have a setup with a previous model, are you thinking about upgrading to the 09 model? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't speak for the previous model, but we have the 2.0 Ghz, 2GB ram 2009 Mac Mini and it plays HD videos smooth as silk. I've tested it with numerous 720p videos, including QuickTime trailers, and it did a phenomenal job. I've tried one 1080p trailer and it worked very well. Just be sure you get that extra Ram. With 2GB it has 256MB shared VRAM. I've heard the new integrated chip, the 9400m, is significantly better than the old intel GMA one. I've never used a Mac with a GMA in it but the 9400m is pretty darn good so far for what you (and I) want it to do.

Good luck and have fun!

Right now, there is effectively little difference in playback performance between the current Mini and the prev gen Min with 2 gHz processors. Both will play high bit rate 1080p content (i.e., Blu-ray rips) just fine for the majority of media if you use Plex; however, each has trouble with certain very high bit rate and/or frame rate 1080p movies (e.g., certain Blu-ray rips, including Iron Man, Borne Supremacy, Indiana Jones 4 and a few others).

This could change dramatically if OpenCL is as good as Apple says it will be. If so, then the 09 Mini will likely smoke the prev gen Mini.

thanks for the responses. I guessed there would be more people who have used their mini for a media server. Anyone else?
