so i bought my grandfather a basic $10 computer microphone from CVS recently so that he could talk to me through iChat when i remotely control his computer... set it up and the mac recognizes the microphone is plugged in, but it does not work. I have it set in system pref's. for the external mic, since the mini does not have an internal one...

not sure why its not working, does the mini require a powered (USB or Outlet) microphone? if so, any reccomendations for a good CHEAP one?

Line in, not Mic in

The Mini does not have a microphone input. It has a line input. If you are going to use a microphone with a line-level input, you will need a pre-amp to bring the low level microphone signal up to line level.

As an alternative, you can use a USB microphone, or a USB preamp.
