sorry to hear about your mac.

holding down the power button with no power or unplugging and waiting 15 seconds is the same thing. they both drain the capacitors in the power supply and gives the logic board a cold start, ensuring the contents of ram are totally empty
this is what can happen to you if you just wait 15 seconds like apple says or hold down the power button with the unit unplugged

update on "sleeping mac experiment"
my first attempt of seeing how long my sleeping mac could stay alive failed. and the mac mini dropped power.
the only thing changed was i am no longer using hdmi and i am using mini display port to VGA adapter. test need to be repeated several more times.
maybe hdmi cable is supplying power for mac???
heres another cool flash back from 1982

they were so worried about teenagers getting shocked and killed by capacitors that they actually made a FBT (Fly Back Transformer) episode of Quincy, ME
quincy was this big tv show where jack plugman used to stand on a soapbox about orphan drugs, and dui laws, etc.
this was season 8, episode 5, unreasonable doubt.
SPOILER ALERT
the kid was working on a television set. he followed apple's advice of simply unplugging his TV set and waiting 15 seconds before repairing his tv set. the Fly Back Transformer ended up electrocuting a baby.
if he would of unplugged the tv set and held the power button on for 15 seconds , the baby would of lived.
