Mac Mini mid 2011 ram

I am confused. I have a 2.3Ghz i5 Mac Mini with only 2 gigs of ram. I have seen threads that say these computers have the capability to run 16 Gigs of ram, but the official line says maximum of 8 Gigs.

What is the scoop?

Just a note: I just upgraded to Yosemite and gained a lot of speed over 10.8.6

It's quite common, even among older Macs, to find out that larger capacity memory sticks are supported by some models.

Your mid-2011, according to Apple, takes a maximum of 8GB RAM. You can be content with that, and that will be good for many uses.
However, other sites, such as Crucial.com, and other sites that sell memory for use in Macs, actually test other configurations. Your mid-2011 mini CAN be upgraded to 16GB if you like. The Mactracker app is a good source to find out that some Mac models can safely be upgraded to higher amounts of RAM than what Apple states.
