I received my new mac mini last week and installed a few things on it over the weekend so that I can run it as an HTPC. Works great but I am having one issue and that is with the video signal. I have the mac mini connected to my Samsung 720p LCD TV with VGA using Apple's miniport to vga adaptor.

When the TV is already turned on and I start the mini or bring the mini out of sleep then everything works OK. However if the TV is off and I start the mini or bring it out of sleep and then turn on the TV, I get a "no video signal" message.

I've tried un-plugging the vga cable and plugging it in again, doesn't work. I've remote desktoped into the mini and I can see it is on, I checked the screen resolution and it is ok, I tried resettting the resolution by changing it to a random resolution and changing it back again but no luck. The only solution is to restart the mini.

Anyone come across this problem and know of a fix? (Apart from turning on the TV first :D)

Thanks!

My impression is that the monitor always needs to be on before starting the machine (Mac Mini), so it can determine the monitor signal requirements at startup.

Maybe this is an OSX issue. Every morning I come to work I turn on my windows PC, get a coffee and then turn on the monitor, never a problem. I had before the mini a windows media center box under the TV and didn't have this problem.

I saw on another forum a similar issue about the mini losing the EDID, which sounds similar to what you are saying. The only solution I've come across so far is purchasing a device similar to this. That to me is too expensive of a solution, almost a quarter of the mini's price

This issue is actually caused by buggy firmware in the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter for the Mac Mini. Apple released a firmware update today to address this. Check your Software Update.
