Mac Mini price drop?

Ok well I am looking at the mac mini and I can see it going in two ways right now and I thought I would share them.

1) Apple updates them very soon and keeps the same price of 600$ (US)

OR

2) Apple keeps the curent chip set in it and lowers it to the original pricing of 500$



Which would you think is more likely, to tell you the truth I have no idea and I could be wrong all together but hey worth a guess.


And we might see an all together price drop so both 1 and 2 (a price drop with C2D!!!) cause right now its not very competitve with the iMac
 
I think that with the next update we will see a price drop, but it wouldn't suprise me if they plan to keep it one processor behind.
 
I'm surprised that Apple doesn't just stick the Pentium Dual-Core in the Mac mini and drop the price. Followed by an upgrade to 1 GB of RAM standard.

I can dream...

I don't think you want a Pentium in that small form factor...

Do you mean Core 2 Duo?
 
I have a feeling they'll drop the price, put in a C2D and possibly add an 802.11n card in the mini when their other lines make the jump to Santa Rosa if they in fact use SR.

You are wrong. The Pentium Dual-Core and Pentium D are two different chips entirely.

Smithfield is two Prescott cores and Presler is two Ceder Mill cores.

Pentium Dual-Core is derived off of Yonah.

I think it's important to keep the 'wow, look at what Apple can fit into such a tiny space' factor.

As such, I'd like to see the pricing stay the same, but the components improve somewhat.

The Mac mini is very important. A few people I know, including myself, were switched via the mini. An underpowered mini will not give a switcher the impression of Mac's that Apple desires.
 
Sub-500 is a key price point, and one the Mini has hit before. I think it will hit that again.

I'd like to see a second level of "shoebox" mini: twice as tall, and about 3x as deep front-to-back. Able to fit the fastest single-slot GPU money can buy :)

These chips are below the T2300 and T2400 the the mini uses now. It could lower the price but it would also lower the performance.

Um, how? They both use Core Duos, I can't imagine that 201Mhz does that much, just put some RAM in those babys

A Core 2 derived Pentium Dual-Core would be more then enough. I'd like to keep a dual core processor on all machines even with the cache cut.

Ha Ha. Your link wasn't confusing, but Intel's marketing strategy sure is.

The use of "Pentium" for these chips is very, very confusing. They should call them Core Duo lite, or something. Or, maybe Core Duo Celeron. :D That's the best analogy for what the smaller cache chips are.

Well the Pentium branding is back for Pentium Dual-Core and Pentium E.

papadopolis1024 asked us if we thought there would be a price drop or an upgrade.

For me the burning question is when, and if it's soon, how soon can we expect some change?

This year has been pretty unusual so far. There was no hardware at MacWorld and now we're in our 5th month without any real rumours about hardware other than 'probably at WWDC'.

you do know apple changed its name from apple computers to apple inc, right?

thats why hardware development and releases has slowed so dramatically :(

That really has nothing to do with it. They changed from Apple Computer to Apple Inc. because they no longer just make computers. They now make Computers, iPods, the Apple TV, iPhone, Wireless routers known as Airport Extreme and Express, plus a slew of other products.

Why would a company who makes more then just computers call themselves simply a computer company? It doesn't make any sense.

I personally am waiting for a Mac mini upgrade before I buy. A price drop would be nice, but I am willing to pay the same price for an upgraded model at the next revision.

Agreed. The mini seems to have incredible potential. I am interested in using it as a HTPC. I wont think of doing it though until they update the graphics.
