I have a Mac Mini 1.25 ghz with 512 mb of ram installed. Every day when I use the computer, the beach ball continues spinning and the programs do not respond. Sometimes I also have to restart my dsl Modem which is from Verizon. I always have to restart the computer and then it goes back to normal for about twenty minutes and then it happens again. I am only running safari, mail, msn messenger, and ichat. What is the problem? Is it the Ram or what?

I've had that problem recently as well, but I think is related to a couple of programs, namely Bits on Wheels and VNCViewer...

Some more information might be helpful. What version of MacOS X are you running? How long do you wait before resetting your computer?

Try leaving the Activity Monitor application (in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder) running with a list of all processes as you work. Processes that stop responding will appear in red.

Also, try leaving the Console application open to gather more information as to what is happening when your machine stops responding.

I would say try to add memory but that isn't really a free and price friendly fix, and it possibly might not fix your problem. But hey, RAM never hurts.

What peripherals do you have plugged into the mini? I think ElectricSheep is onto something with Activity Monitor but in addition to looking for stopped/failed processes, also look to see which processes are taking up abnormally large amounts of RAM or CPU.

I know you listed your running apps, but are there any third-party add-ons that you are using for Safari or for changing the look of the system?

Is the RAM third party or did it come with the mini from Apple? Did you install it yourself?
