yesterday my mini went to sleep but would not wake up other than switch back from the wall first time it has happened the only thing i did different was leave the external speakers switched on after viewing a film if i let it sleep overnight the volume is always greyed out until i unplug the speaker jack and plug back in .
still under warranty is something wrong here also might be nothing but only the small light on the mini is on i thought both are ?.

apple asked me to reset the smc and pram
which light should be lit both or just the tiny one not the ir one could have swore that used to be on can it be turned on and off and I've done something by mistake ?.

There's a white LED, the black circle is the IR receiver. This will not illuminate.

thanks just had remote session with apple they told me also but after sleeping the mac volume control is always greyed out until i unlpug the jack and plug it back in reset the smc and pram said if that don't work take it to genius bar

guys the volume ontol in the menu bar should it be greyed out with the speaker jack uplugged? if i leave my mac on all night its greyed out in the morning a simple unplug the jack and plug back in fixes but if i leave it out it stays greyed out is this normal a bug or hardware ?

Had this problem for over a year with my 2012 Mac Mini.

Happens on Mavericks and Yosemite even after fresh installs. No fix found yet.

I have unplugged my external speakers and just use the internal speaker.

I also get the issue after Airplaying to my Apple TV as its classed as another audio device.

The problem I get is I leave my computer on 24/7 but just turn the monitor off, but after using external speakers or Airplaying my monitor will not come back on. This is with sleep disabled too.

It's a problem related to the number of audio devices connected to the Mac Mini, because my Monitor is connected via HDMI and HDMI supports audio this is all I can have connected.

mini 2012 has some issue with hdmi monitors. If you are not using audio on the monitor, try to connect your mini to DVI input and make sure HDMI cable is disconnected. Same probably true for mini Display Port.

well just went into system preferences noticed the sound had switched from headphones to my monitor after an inactive period i.e. sleep but changing it back in prefrences to headphones solves it . I'm assuming now its a but and not a hardware issue.
