Mac Mini question

Hey everyone, as you can see i'm an iMac owner and want to simplify my parents' lives by 'forcing' them to get a mac after their latest PC fiasco. Here's the jist they have a keyboard, mouse and monitor already so I think they're a perfect 'mini' fit.

I know I could've found this answer somewhere on here but I'm about to go out and wanted some feed back:

Should they buy mac mini now or wait till after the new year.

reading current rumors tells me to be skeptical as they may release a new version or, more likely, get rid of it in favor of something else.

If you're not in a dire hurry, I'd wait until after the MacWorld show in early January. There's talk of a mini update. Of course, that's just talk. There's also constant speculation that the mini is going to be discontinued. If that happens, though, you'll still be able to find deals on remaining inventory or used ones.

I am holding out on a new Mac until Snow Leopard ships. If a new Mini graces us with its presence, I will buy it.

If not, I will buy a MacBook since I will never own an iMac, and the Mac Pro is WAY overkill for what I need. I like the fact that the new MacBook can drive a 30" display. That's pretty sweet for the consumer model to have that kind of oomph.

I bought a Mini for my mom last Thanksgiving/Xmas since she had a PC fiasco as you put it. Here we are a year later, and the out of date Mini that I bought is that much further out of date.

My mini is two years old now~am running leopard, and did have upgrade from the factory for 1G of memory instead of the standard 512mb but I sure don't feel I'm "out-of-date". The unit still sings and does everything I need it to do. Seems it might be better to get a current "known" instead of waiting for something with an upgrade that might cause headaches~afterall it is for the parents accustomed to foolin' with a pc-they'll love it..love mine and don't really have any plans to replace soon, though may max the RAM sometime..

i just want to comment on the bold stuff that i dont get it my macbook can hook up to my 40" can somone tell me why its like so special that the new macbook can go up to a 30"

Its less about screen size and more about screen resolution.

I'm assuming that poster meant an Apple Cinema Display, which is a very high resolution screen. And I'm guessing your talking about an HDTV which has a lower resolution

A 30" computer display is typically a 2560 x 1600 display.

A 24" computer display is typically 1920 x 1200.

These can be other sizes but with the standard pixel spacing those pixels counts and resolutions work out, and these sizes/pixel are what is commonly sold.

A 1080P HDTV is always 1920 x 1080 and can be any size - commonly 37" to 60" but there are bigger and smaller. And of course HDTVs can be 720P and a variety of other resolutions, but nothing more than 1920 x 1080 in the mainstream market.

You assume correctly. I plan to put a 2560x1600 display on my desk, and if a new Mini comes along that can't drive it, I will be buying a MacBook that can.

But unless Apple gets on the ball and announces a wicked new 30" display, I will have to do something other than an ACD since the current 30" is out of date in a big way for its price.
