mac mini/reinstalling tiger problems

I just got my dad's old mac mini. When I try and reinstall tiger to do a clean install It stops startup in the middle of the grey screen with the apple on it. Then if i try and restart with the tiger disc in i get the same result. It works fine when the apple disk is not in the drive.

any ideas?

i've tried repairing permissions and reseting the pram.

during startup the computer noticeably crashes... the apple logo shifts right and there are 2 strange screen anomalies that come up

I am with out a doubt the biggest idiot in the world... either that or I'm just super excited about the mac mini. Either way the problem was that I put in the PANTER disc instead... They look EXACTLY the same, so it can't be that bad of a mess-up. But that does lead to the question of people wanting to go back to panther... is it possible??

Nope, apple won't let you install older os versions than the one it shipped with. If your lucky it might take 10.3.9 but it won't take earlier.
