Mac Mini Server 2011 connecting to VGA

I have a KVM switch which I want to use with my Mac Mini Server 2011 on it. However it doesn't seem to be working. The Mac Mini 2011 uses an HDMI to DVI-D and so I got a DVI-D to DVI-I adapter. Connected that to a DVI-I to VGA adapter to connect to the monitor.

But I get no video. If I do HDMI to DVI-D to DVI-I, the monitor works fine. But that's going straight to the monitor, not going through the KVM.

So does anyone have any idea on how to resolve this?

just buy this cable plug it into the t-bolt/ minidisplayport it works fine

hdmi is digital only it does not support vga it does support dvi


it you want two monitors use the hdmi for one and the t-bolt/mini display port for the other.

try to return all the stuff you purchased you don't need it.

I was aware HDMI was digital only. But so is DVI, right? I've seen DVI to VGA cables before and those seem to work fine on computers (hell forget the cables, there are a crapload of DVI to VGA adapters). Is this specific to the fact that I'm dealing with HDMI?

A bit pricy, but it seems to claim to handle the conversion.

I didn't want to use up the Thunderbolt port because I was planning on using a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet cable (when such a cable is ever released!). Although that brings up another question for me. How fast is USB to Ethernet? I know its not Gigabit, but will it go faster than 100Mbps?

yes on the older mac mini's dvi to vga was supported. they dropped this support on the 2010 mac mini and I am 95 percent sure it is still dropped for the 2011 mini.

There are a number of types of DVI connections... DVI-I, DVI-D, DVI-A, (d=digital, i=integrated, a=analog) When starting with a HDMI connection (which is all digital), no matter what the connector adapts to, you will never get more than a DVI-D, unless you purchase a fancy converter box. Mini-Display Port is able to Support a VGA connection, but the HDMI is not.
