Hello,

I have a late 2010 Mini Server 2.66ghz 4gb ram.

When I got the system I loaded regular Snow Leopard onto it and now I want to put a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on it again and I am having a hell of a time. I used the same dmg file that I used last time on the same USB stick that I used last time.

Every time I reboot and choose the USB drive it will start loading and then the screen goes gray and it says I need to shutdown my computer (kernel panic from what I'm told).

The dmg file I have been using is from the original discs that came with my last Mac Mini. I have also downloaded and tried 3 other versions. I have also tried installing a copy of Leopard and the same thing happens every time. I have also tried using two different USB drives and same problem each time.

Is there something I am missing? If you have any ideas please let me know.

Currently I am:
1. Erasing 16GB USB Drive with disk utility
2. Using the restore function in disk utility to load the OSX Install files to the usb drive
3. Restarting the Mini and getting kernel panics

Thanks

Perhaps try an external DVD drive and the install discs (DVDs).

Cheers

Ok...so I went out and bought an external disk drive and the same thing happens when I try to install from a physical retail disk. I just want to reinstall OSX! Can someone please help?

Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac

Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs

What OS version and build are you trying to install? Chances are it is too old and probably for the wrong machine (I don't know what "old" Mac Mini refers to).

And, you cannot install Leopard. No chance. Good news, this is a common mistake.

Answer:

You need the custom install DVDs that came with the non-Server Mac Mini. Mac OS X 10.6.3 build 10D2235 or the later 10.6.4 build 10F2108.
