Are company is looking at buying a mac mini server mostly for use within the office for a mixture of mac and windows machines. We do have a couple of people that work outside of the office and we would want to give them access to certain files which im sure we would do via VPN

How does VPN exactly work, can we give them access to only certain files, also i presume we need to load the computers with some vpn software is there a certain one we would need to use?

thanks for your help any info is of great help

The VPN gives them access to the network the server is on, as if they were in the office. It does not grant (or restrict) access to files - you do that the same way you would with local machines (file sharing controls, ACLs, etc.).

also i presume we need to load the computers with some vpn software is there a certain one we would need to use?

Both Macs and Windows machines come with all the software you need already installed. Configuring L2TP over IPSec VPNs is a bit of a headache with Windows, but it can be done.
