So looking at everything it seems a mac mini as a media server is a good idea. I am curious to know if anyone has any knowledge on the min spec of the machine? I have been looking on ebay at old mac mini, some of them G4 spec. Would this be suitable?

iTunes library - on my Nas
Additional media - on Nas

Mac mini would just be for the home so that if I am away with the mac, the whole thing is not bought to a stand still for the Mrs....

I would avoid anything older then an intel chipped version. iTunes is being updated frequently, and sooner rather then later, the powerpc chip just wont be supported. In fact I think is some ways its already happened.

Frankly, considering the price of the old ones, I think a brand new one is your best bet. You can grab a 2011 Mini for $550 or so, if you shop around. Thats with the latest technologies and a warranty. Thats tough to beat.
