I have got a new Mac mini server & bought the mini displayport to VGA adaptor which plugs into the thunderbolt port. using my existing Dell monitor which only has a VGA cable.

When switching the Mac on the screen will show with no problems.

If the Mac goes to sleep or if I switch off the screen it takes a long time for the screen to respond when I return.
moving the mouse/keyboard etc I know that the mac is responding but I can't get anything to show on the screen.
If I unplug the adaptor from the thunderbolt port then plug it in again eventually the screen display shows but it usually takes at least 2-3 minutes - sometimes much longer. It would be quicker to turn it off every time & reboot it as the screen would then show instantly.

Any ideas on how to solve this?
