Hi there!

So I'm considering purchasing a new Mac Mini and setting up a server OS on it. My question is, when Apple releases macOS Sierra this fall will there be a new version of the server OS as well? I'm thinking that if the server OS is going to change then I'll wait 2-3 months and just buy the new Mini with Sierra and then pay the extra $20 for the new server OS at that time. If the server OS is not changing then I'll just buy it now and do the $20 upgrade to OS X El Capitan server.

I also have 2-3 other Macs at home that I do plan on upgrading to Sierra when it's out, are there any interaction issues between Sierra and OS X El Capitan server?

Thanks in advance!

By "server OS", you mean the OS X Server app from the App Store right? It's almost certain that Apple will release a new major version of it later this fall (the macOS Sierra Server), if you don't need it right now you should wait for the new one instead of buying OS X Server 5.

Also if you are subscribed to the Apple developer Program, OS X Server 5 comes for free.

There shouldn't be any issues at all; I am still running Yosemite on my home server, and it works perfectly well with El Capitan on my other Macs.

I use a Mac mini for a home server as well; found I didn't even need OS X server for what I was doing (file sharing). Been running this setup for years and really like it.
