LOL, This machine has been crunching data for Seti at home for a long time now 24/7. It keeps trudging along, month after month. It's always warm but no failures yet. I am going to buy a backup Fan assembly. Anyone know where I can get one ?

I used to but built bigger ones to crunch with. Did WCG for a few years on a 1.66 mac mini years ago. Just make sure it has plenty of room to breath and turn up the fans a few notches to keep it cool. Also prop it up a few inches. They are nice little crunchers. Which mini are you crunching with? I gave up on looking for little green men. Decided to crunch a worthy project such as www.worldcommunitygrid.org to help find cures for diseases.

Mac mini mid 2011. Core I5 2.5 GHz. Have a laptop cooler under it, but I did not quantify how much that helps yet

Better off using something like 2 pencils on each side to prop it up so air flows all around it. The aluminum case helps cool the mini. That's what I did plus turned up the fans a bit.
If apple would put a hex in a mini @3Ghz or better, would be an awesome cruncher. Crunch on.

I'll give the pencil idea a try tonight after work. I think they are going to release a redesigned mac pro in the next few months, possibly smaller, if thats the case I am buying one. Those should be able to handle the heat even better.

Guys,

I have applied Prolimatech cpu thermal compound to the cpu, put the mini on side and my i7 2.7 stil hovers around 95-105 degrees with closed side cover. If I remove the cover, it goes down to around 90-95...

I am actually reluctant to run Boinc because of this, 12 hours a day, not sure about this temp being good for the internals?
