My Mac Mini starts but freezes. I get Apple logo but soon the display goes blank and Mac switches off. Can't start in Safe mode or reboot. Can start in single user mode but after all the text appears I'm not able to write anything.

Last lines on the display are:
BSD root: disk Os3, major 14, minor 12
disk Os3: I/O error.

After a while the display runs some texts again and goes blank. Mac also switches off. Does this mean that I have a broken hard disc?

Boot the computer from a DVD. If that works your hard drive is shot. If not then you have bigger problems.

Cheers

Problem solved

Hard disk was okay but I was forced to empty it and install OS X again. Lost some holiday pics but at least the machine is working now.

I gotta admit, you are way braver than me. I don't know what you used to test your disk to verify it's indeed fine (and doesn't have any bad blocks), but even I did a thorough scan, I would never feel comfortable with my data on it.

And it sounds like you don't even have Time Machine running! You have brass () ()'s!
