Mac mini through customs?

I'm looking to buy my next Mac and have decided on a Mac mini as I don't want a portable device like a laptop, I just need something which is moveable as I'll be moving between houses (and countries) a few times over the coming years.
I'll be wanting to stick the Mac mini in my luggage (not hand luggage) when flying to Australia later this year and I'm wondering if it might pose as a concern to security when they're scanning my bags and see what looks like a small box containing wires and components I keep thinking of that news story from a few years ago when someone was apprehended for carrying a MacBook Air which caused concern with the customs guys as it didn't fit the traditional description of a laptop.
So I'm curious if anyone here has flown with a Mac mini before? Or think I might experience problems doing this?

Never ever put electronics in checked luggage. Security concerns aside, it's a good way to have it disappear on the trip, and the airlines specifically do not cover electronics in checked luggage, so you're out of luck if it's gone.

I've put all kinds of electronics in my checked luggage, crossed the ocean dozens of times .......... desktop computers, large screen lcd monitors, hard drives, expensive speakers, etc, etc. No ones said anything to me. Airlines won't cover it, but ... if you're willing to take the risk go for it Maybe wrapping your luggage will make you feel more at ease.

Oh and what can customs say? It's your personal property. If it's open and looks even a little used they can't say anything. If it's in a box, all wrapped up ... ok then you might have to worry.

I would reconsider the laptop. Perhaps the 13" MBP with an external display?

My parents recently brought my 27" i7 from Chicago to Bangkok in its original box as checked in luggage, then I did the same from Bangkok to Tokyo where I work. No problem with customs, no damage. (BTW this week 47 has no yellow tinge, loud HD, loud fan, screen flicker, etc. She's a beauty.)

If you're concerned, suggestion is to make your machine look like it's been used. Open the box, remove the plastic wrapping and crumple it a bit, take the install DVDs out, etc. Also, since the Mini is so small and light, DO carry it on board with you. There's no reason to put it in your checked luggage. Like someone posted earlier, you're asking for it to be stolen in your luggage. You will not have any problems. Just make sure you have the AC adaptor with you in case you need to power it up and show the airport security.

i bought my mac imni in the states while on holiday and brought it home to Ireland in my suit case. No problems
