Mac mini thunderbolt ssd

I was wondering if you can use Kingston hyperx ssd with USB housing on the thunderbolt port on the mini? Does anyone know if it would boot from thunderbolt? I dont see why it wouldn't work, being that I could use a thunderbolt adapter to USB to connect the ssd. As far as speed are concerned there shouldn't be any bottleneck. Only the speed of the ssd. Anyone every try this?

Seagate has a thunderbolt to sata adapter for 99 + cable. Your comment about a USB to thunderbolt a. Does not exist and b. USB 2.0 would be a bottleneck so it would have to be USB 3.0 but then you are going sata to USB 3 to thunderbolt?

If you buy the hyperx with installation kit it comes with a USB housing I guess so it makes it easy to clone your hard drive to install the ssd later, I assume. I figured that the USB would be usb3.0 but I haven't actually confirmed that, but if my guess was right I think USB 3 would let the hard drive hit its full speed? I thought there would be an adaptor from USB to thunder bolt.

Correct. Seagate has released the Seagate Thunderbolt GoFlex 2.5" adapter that has a standard SATA III connector. The controller in the Seagate is still the bottleneck with speeds about 100MBps over SATA II. There is currently a long thread about drive compatibility which appears to be problematic with SATA III SSDs larger than 480GB causing them to disconnect.

size matters. along with sata III vs sata II the crucial m4 128gb runs well.

speeds are very good 380 read 190 write. cost is about

50 = cable
100 = seagate adapter
175 = crucial m4
325 = total

not sure i want to spend the cash right now to test it. I also think this is a sata II drive so it won't be that fast.


I have had the 256gb samsung series 470 setup with the seagate it is a sata II type ssd it has been flawless along with the big intel 600gb ssd series 320 sata II flawless.



I got my 256gb samsungs from this seller. they were new with no power on usage.

I'm not to worried about cost, it's worth it to have your computer on a portable ssd. For what I need anyway. I wanted to get the Kingston hyper x 240 gb ssd, at top speed it should be around the same speed as the vertex 3. I was just wondering if anyone has reached these speeds while being external, hypothetically speaking, This should be a possibility. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it. I see shortcut has in the other thread but with bigger ssd's and they didn't seem to work but what I really want to know is if there was a bottle neck or not? Like I said there shouldnt be but sometimes company's state there products to support certain speeds but in the end they don't. has anyone seen speed of 500 plus? Or close to?

yeah i got in the 440's with the samsung series 830 but I had a big 512gb and it crashes like a mofo.

also try to remember unless you are cloning the drive those numbers are not that important the 4k read / writes are key.

I do have a 240 I still need to test.

I hope your hitting speeds of 500 and above, so your going to be using the seagate adapter through thunderbolt with the mushkin ssd? If u don't see a bottleneck I'm all in for the seagate adapter and the hyperx 240gb ssd
