Just stick an external USB HDD on the back of it for Time Machine, share all you need and job done.

Check out Plex media server and plex.
You can serve all of your vids and pics and music, and stream and play them on any computer, ipad, iphone running the app.

the fastest way to share music is to set up home sharing in itunes. just turn it on with both machines and your done. the only thing that sucks about it is the machine with the music on it has to be awake.

The only thing that sucks about it, is it is itunes. :p

i think daeko was talking about my time capsule

I didnt actually see that you already have a time capsule. I was referring to the Mac Mini (for a time machine backup), but alas, thats a pointless comment too as there is more than 1 USB port . So just continue to use that as your backup device over ethernet/wireless. Your Mac Mini is already setup for you to be a server. You dont really need to do anything, just share all your media.

Is the OP confusing the term "server" to mean a media server? I know I did. I still don't know what the mini server does...

It depends what you want it to do?

Podcast server? web server? directory server? dns server? mail server? time machine backup server? network boot server?

You can just download and install Lion Server, but none of those services will be automatically configured for you.

If you just want it to stream media you can do that from itunes or a DLNA server program and don't need or want lion server.

You don't need to get the server app. Just leave iTunes running and enable home sharing. You can also install plex media server on it.

I do the same things with my server, and I've disabled the server app.

Yes, you just buy the App from the App store, but with for Mountain Lion as ML Server App is cheaper than Lion Server App.

You may not need the Server App for what you want though so do the research.
