I am planning on buying a mac mini, to be used mainly for school as well as photography. I already have two 150gb raptors that I would like to run with the mini. Since two drives w/o heatsinks won't fit in the mini, I would have to somehow route the drives externally. I would not use firewire as that would be too slow. This would mean making holes in enclosure to accomplish this. So, before I set out on this project, would I benefit more from just installing an ssd? The cost is a factor, but ssd also opens up possibility of using two in raid0 and they should fit in the enclosure. So, what is the performance of two 150gb raptors in raid0 compared to ssd? Anybody do anything similar with the raptors?

I would definitely get SSD(s). Even a single SSD may be faster than dual Raptors in RAID 0. If you choose to go for Raptors, you have to modify the case and remove some of it to use Raptors.
