Mac Mini update/discon. soon?

Hello Macrumors,

I've been thinking about making the switch for a while now and thought the mini was the perfect replacement for my P4 3ghz desktop PC, I have a Sony Vaio laptop and the desktop is hooked up to my LCD TV mainly used for storing and watching films.

What i noticed last week was the 2 main online stores i shop from Dabs and Play the 1.83ghz Mini has dissapeared from sale.

page has completely dissapeared.

The 2ghz are on both sites still but does this mean that Apple are'nt giving out any more stock or am i making something out of nothing? I've put myself in a situation now were im not sure if i want to buy one from Apple or elsewhere in case there discontinued or to wait and see if there's an update:confused:
 
Well, nobody knows for sure. Apple is still selling them, and if you're gonna get a current generation, would highly recommend the Apple refurb store for the mini's.

Since the Macbooks were updated in November, and the Mini traditionally shares many of the same components, the next most likely upgrade path for the mini will include moving to the santa rosa chipset, the GMA X3100 gpu, and if we're lucky wireless n.

So, if you don't see yourself needing 4GB of RAM, or a better GPU, then you needn't worry about waiting. Still, when/if any updates happen, nobody here can say for sure.

I just thought it was strange that they both went out of stock at the same time and the usual thing would be the status changing to "out of stock" or "available in 3-4 weeks" etc.

I know it's due an update and i think i'd be a bit dissapointed if i bought one and then it was even though it probably wouldnt benefit me all that much.
 
I will Definattely sell my current 1.66 core duo and get a new 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo with Wireless N, intel 3100 gfx and the ability for me to upgrade to 4GB
plus a 160gb HD
 
I disagree with those saying that the mini is going away. That would mean the cheapest headless Mac would be $2299.

Back before the mini, there were varieties of G5 powermacs available new for $1499. I miss those days! The $1499 base powermac was my entry into the world of OSX, but now apple.com lists Mac Pros as starting at $2799 (you have to look so see you can downgrade). I think the mini will stay around, but might actually get its specs bumped to a base around $1k US.

Based on the sample of those I work/play with, there are a lot of minis around as backup computers/home servers, etc. This is in addition to those making the switch to OSX after liking things like the ipod.

The case for the computer is easy to make, and I do not think it will go away even if there is not a lot of attention drawn to it. When will it be updated, who knows. SR Macbooks are on their first generation, so it think we may have a 2.0/2.16/2.33 update in there before heading to the SR platform.
 
OK here goes another one Misco they were in stock there the other day, again just dissapeared:eek:
 
Both models have been out of stock at John Lewis for several weeks too.
 
I'm hoping Apple don't discontinue it. If they update it to run up to 4 GB RAM then I'd be seriously tempted to get one and demote my Quicksilver to OS 9 and run older music software on it.
 
This is interesting. It could be the end of the mini, or it might get merged with the :apple:tv, or an upgrade. There have been a lot of scares over the past few months like this, but you never know...
 
It needs some serious hardware updates or a serious price cut to make it even reasonable value in my opinion. I know you're paying a premium for the small design but considering I can get a Quad Core Core 2/2GB RAM/500GB Hardrive/128MB ATI 2400/DVD-RW Dell Base unit for £379, it's easy to see why Apple has a tiny market share in the UK.

I concur, I just sold one of my TV's and have an itch to buy a new toy. It'd be great as a HTPC in my bedroom. 30" display, DVD player, EyeTV, Mini please please upgrade...LOL
 
Some people have said that Apple usually announces new hardware on Tuesday's, and tomorrow happens to be a Tuesday (unless your in the far east where Tuesday is almost done).

Maybe Apple is holding out until the IPhone/Touch SDK will be released later this month (possibly tomorrow as well).
 
i used to use my mini as a HTPC but the sound hook up sucks, hopefully they will put HDMI on on the new mini's, then it would make a perfect HTPC
 
I wouldn't buy anything until after the end of February when the expected announcements occur...
 
Just out of curiousity - There's been very little attention to this really, in comparison to
- Linkin Park apparently saying they're doing a gig for Apple next Tuesday
- MBP updates (off the back of today's exteme exitement of shuffle updates).

Is this one of those Apple's completely hush hush moves, to bring out something new? Would EOLing the Mac Mini leave a line up hole - in the thinking that there may be something new to replace it, or have it in a new form factor?
 
I would love to see an update to the Minis. I think they are great machines if you know what you are getting for the price. I have always been tempted to buy one and with new updates I might pull the trigger.
 
Well, I just got my first Mac Mini and I really love it! I have it sitting in my Living Room entertainment center hooked up to my 42" LCD HDTV and surfing the net from my couch using a terrific Apple BT keyboard and mouse.

I opted for the 1.83ghz model since I didn't the extra premium for slightly better performance was hardly worth it, as well as a DVD burner, which I don't use because I rarely need to burn DVDs, mostly just CDs, and if I do, I have an external I can hook up to it.

But I really do hope they continue with the Mini line, since it's the only sub-$1000 Mac you can buy. It's really a terrific marketing tool for Apple to get people to switch from the PC to the Mac. Dumping would be the dumbest thing Apple has ever done, IMHO, because the sub-$1000 market is HUGE, and largely dominated by the likes of Dell.

If you're out there Mr. Jobs, please continue the Mini. And if you do, please make 2gb the standard Ram and bump the Video Ram to 256mb dedicated and a 7200rpm 100gb HD. I hope Apple finds a solution to the overheat problem associated with these upgrades. I could totally see a "Mac Mini Extreme!" :)
 
Popped into the London Regents Street store yesterday and was surprised to find that there was only one Mini on display. Clearly Apple want to use their floor space to promote the newer higher spec'd machines, and I understand that, but it nonetheless seems odd that the machine touted as the 'switcher' had such a low profile..

I'm guessing there must be ~50(?) display machines over the two floors, and yet only 1 Mini out..

yeah, i thought there would be more than one. mind you, there are only two mac pros in the building.
