Mac Mini - Video Output problem

I've bought a 1.83 Core 2 Duo from eBay with a strange problem and wondering if its a common/known fault. Upon turning on the Mac Mini and getting to the Password screen, all is fine. However, when the Desktop is loaded the screen becomes un-viewable. This is solved by taking out the DVI cable, waiting for my monitor to say No Signal, and then plugging back into the Mini.

I have tried using a DVI to VGA and DVI to HDMI and have the same results with both. Any suggestions would be welcome.
