Here's my setup:
- 1st gen Apple TV with Crystal HD graphics card running XBMC for 1080P mkv/m4v's
- Synology DS211 acting as attached media server
- 2nd gen Apple TV JB'en running FireCore (only outputs 720P)
What I would like to do is replace the two Apple TV's with one device. I kept the 2nd gen running for various reasons, so I have been using both although the hacked 1st gen has been great for playing almost everything I throw at it.
I ordered the 3rd gen Apple TV but upon further examination I am not impressed with the upgrades and worry that it may not play some of my Blu-Ray encodes (and it doesn't support mkv or DTS as my current system, and will not allow access to my attached NAS). I don't want to have to jailbreak it for these features as I just don't have the time these days.
I am considering getting a base Mac Mini (although am unsure of the Intel graphics and wonder if the AMD would be better suited for heavier media), and throwing in extra RAM from OWC or Crucial. This morning a friend mentioned the HP TV Connect 2.0 which I know nothing about. If the HP can serve my needs (1080P, multi-file support, DTS sound, attached NAS support, etc) that may be better than throwing ~$600 down for a Mini.
Any one have any thoughts and/or suggestions? Thanks!
