I have decided to buy a mac mini with a cinema 23" HD display. Although I am wondering if the mac mini can support that big display?
Also I've heard some rumors about mac mini updates. Should I wait for a little bit?
Thanks

If I were you, I'd wait until after next Wednesday. If they haven't been officially updated by then, just buy one.

As to supporting that display, I have the current mini with a 20" Cinema Display, and it handles wonderfully. I don't have the words to describe how beautiful it is.

as far as i know the mac mini supports the 23" inch display it's the 30" that needs dual link dvi in. here are the specs from apples side.

System Requirements

20-inch Cinema and 23-inch Cinema HD Displays

- Power Mac G4 or G5 with NVIDIA graphics card or ATI Radeon 7500 or better graphics card and Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later
- PowerBook G4 with DVI port and Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later

Make sure you wait until the 1.5 G4 and 64mb video are really announced by Apple. 32mb video is a killer these days even more so then the G4. 1.5 G4 and 64 mb video or better makes for a nice all around machine. 32 mb 9200 in Mac mini is its achilles heel in my view and yes we have one. wife loves it though.

great advice. I have the 1.42 with an acrylic 23". It's a very elegant setup, although I could use the extra mb. I've also got to upgrade the RAM - Tiger loves memory.

I would wait till the new mini updates are mainstream over the next few days or weeks.

The new models will have 64 MB VRAM and that's a very important improvement. You CAN NOT upgrade the stock VRAM, it's soldered in place.

The Apple 23" are beautiful cosmetically and quite tempting,
but there are serious widely published quality control issues with that model.

You're far better off with an Apple 20" or a Dell 2405 FPW WS 24" HD display
for less than $900.

The Dell 24" LCD is VERY nice, I bought it instead of the 23" ACD and don't regret it. Its primarily hooked up to my PC  but I hook my PB up to it often and its just GREAT!

I dont understand how you could pay almost 3x as much for the display then you do the actual computer. Why not just buy a 20" iMac? A fully loaded 20" iMac is only $1800. Thats always baffled me when I see someone with a $500 MacMini and a $1500 display.

Either way, I'd wait at least until Wednesday to see if they announce any special MacMini stuff.

A mini with the expected improvements will actually be a pretty awsome little box.

For anyone who want's to check out OS X
the mini allows them an affordable way
to do so.

If it turns out that the user requires a beefier CPU, then he can sell or hand down the mini and still use his fantastic display when he buys his first PowerMac.

If you don't mind me asking why would you buy this config? Why not just buy an iMac G5?

What's wrong with your Power Mac?
Why not get a dual processor upgrade, max out the ram and maybe drop in a better graphics card and you have a setup that will smoke the Mini and should last a few more years, for about the same as a Mini will cost you.

That is exactly what I'm doing.

I got my Mac Mini 1.42ghz as a Mac OS X test machine.

I then got the beautiful 20" ACD.

And now, when they update the PowerMacs, Im getting one of the middle line ones!

I just upgraded my mini to 1GB RAM and it makes a huge difference. I see you only have 512 so maybe spend $100 on a 1GB and enjoy more speed while you wait for new powermacs.

For anyone with a mini upgrade to 1GB and add an external fw drive. Those 2 upgrades make the mini a very respectable system. Mine has both and it really purrs along nice and mine is only a 1.25GHz.

I concur. You get a lot nicer machine for less money. Maybe the OP wants to use the display on their PowerMac as well. IMHO I wouldn't go with a Mini if I already had that PowerMac.

I view it the opposite. Buying a good display is a long term investment. I would never buy a 20" imac because I would be stuck with a display that I couldn't use if I wanted to upgrade my computer. I learned that lesson after I bought my flat panel iMac.

To each his own. I would much rather spend the money on a lower end new PM and spend 1/2 as much on the Dell displays, which are exactly the same as the ACD, just different colors. But again, to each his own. ;)

I'm with you on this one. As pretty as the Apple displays are they are way to pricey for me. I myself would get a mini with a Dell 20" or 24".

I just ordered a Dell 20.1" display for $394 shipped. Keep in mind this is the exact same display as the ACD, which is listed for $799 on Apples website. :D

those are as nice looking as apple's lcd. I would like one some day.

most of the lcd I see though make me glad I have a high end crt but the dell and apple screens have great colour and speed.

Color seems to be good enough on these LCDs to not tell much of a difference between it and my 19" Sony CRT. The very little bit of color mismatch is totally worth the tinyness of the LCD. :D
