I'm truly surprised that after all this time, we still haven't seen a new "thinner" "even more crippled" mini based off the core m chips.

I used to use the pre-"crippled" quad core minis, so I have been patiently waiting for some mini news. I expected apple to release a core m machine and I wondered just how small an enclosure they could make for the 12" macbook motherboard without the screen, keyboard and batteries. At first I derided my own imagined redesign but soon came to appreciate the convenience of such a tiny desktop apple computer.

If you sacrifice performance for portability, it's still at least some kind of step forward. Whereas dropping the quad core option was a step back, and they haven't moved an inch since then! Frustrating.

I'm still waiting on a mini of any kind, but a core m mini with no fan, no power brick, small box with an HDMI and some type A and C ports. That could be a handy machine.

If there isn't a refresh of the Mac mini in October 2017, than this type of product will soon be EOLed.
At least, until they sell all the stock.

The only successor, I can imagine, is the upcomming "modular" (whatever that means) Mac (Pro).
However don't have really high hopes for this, because it can happen, that it's price will be sky-high.

I suppose you mean October 2018?
