Mac Mini won't connect to ad-hoc wifi network since upgrading to catalina

I had been using my Mac Mini connected via wifi to an ad-hoc wifi network created by my Ubuntu laptop. I can still connect to that same network using both Android and iPhone phones, so I know it is still working.

I can see the ssid in the network panel, and it prompts me to enter the password, but when I do it says:

"The wi-fi network "blabla" could not be joined.

and invites me to run diagnostics, but I've done that and they don't seem to help.

I also attempted to join the network via the command line using 'networksetup' to switch the wifi off then on again and then to 'setairportnetwork' to supply the interface (en1), the ssid and password; but it responds similarly:

'
Failed to join network blabla.
Error: 22 The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.wifi.apple80211API.error error 22.)
'

The mac mini can join the wifi network on my router just fine, so it's not the mac mini's hardware.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get this working again?
 
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this. I noticed there were lots of recommendations on how best to ask questions such that people might respond, so perhaps I didn't follow those too well, and/or missed some pertinent information?
 
I'm sure you have your reasons but it seems like you're making the network connection more complex than it needs to be, especially if you have a router that the Mini can connect to. It's definitely a setup that's unusual, which would lead to reduced responses on here.

Can the Mini connect to hotspot on your phone, if you have that capability? That's effectively the same ad-hoc network type.

Ah, I've not looked. I'm not familiar with Macs...would you mind telling where I should look?

Yeah, my laptop is for testing, and has a web server on it (I'm a web developer), and also routes through a vpn (for various reasons).

Hrm, connect to my phone...interesting...yes, that should be 'the same thing'. I'll have to try that in the morning - thanks for the suggestion.

Still, I wonder why the change after upgrading to caralina. Is there a way to downgrade, I wonder...
 
OK, so I tried this today, and it does connect to my phone's hotspot, so it is something specific to my laptop.

I managed to find log files and it prints this:
