I just got a used Mac Mini (1.42ghz bought in 05) from a friend because she got a new computer. Took it home, plugged it in and hit the power button. After hearing the startup chime it shutoff completely. Now it will not turn on at all, no lights, no startup chime, no noises. I tried unplugging it for awhile and plugging it back in. I also tried doing the pram reset.... nothing. Is there anything I'm missing that could prevent this computer from turning on? Any help would be appreciated.

I've tried three different outlets (all had other stuff plugged in that was working just fine). I've unplugged both the power cord from the brick and plugged it back in to make sure it was tight as well as the power cord out of the back of the computer many times. It definitely is getting power (assuming the brick is good).

Is it possible that the PRAM battery could be dead and causing the problems? If so could replacing it fix the issue?

Sounds like something got zapped. Did you reset the SMC? Unplug everything and press and hold the power button for 5 seconds or longer then plug the power in and try again.

I would find out why your friend got a new computer. ;) Most likely it didn't work before. If you do not succeed in resetting the SMC then you may have a dead machine. You can take it into Apple where they'll take a look at it, but it does sound like it's dead.

She got a new computer because she wanted a laptop. This computer is old and it was time to get a Macbook. What I don't understand is it started to turn on the first time plugging it in . Then nothing.

Oh also for those of you that recommended resetting the SMC... this is a G4 mac mini, SMC would be an intel mini thing. Yes I did try resetting the PMU though.
