Mac Network Setting (Wi-Fi and Ethernet)

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with something I am experiencing.

Basically in our office all Mac Desktops have an Ethernet cable plugged in as well as being connected to our hidden Wi-Fi network. The problem I am experiencing is that Wi-Fi seems to be taking precedence over Ethernet. I went round all of the Macs checking the service order in the network preferences and Ethernet is at the top followed by Wi-Fi.

So I am a bit confused why Wi-Fi is taking precedence. I the only fix I have found is to turn Wi-Fi off and it will have to revert to Ethernet.

Have you ever come around anything like this?

Can we start with the why?

Is there a specific reason to connect to both? Only one will be live, so....what's the purpose?

Anything unusual or unique about the router, or DHCP, wireless network....or anything else that might trigger this? Since you are seeing many/all behaving the same, seems unlikely it is a Mac config issue.

To test a Mac, you can safely delete WiFi, and create a new interface, just in case there is something corrupt. Use the little plus and minus buttons on the lower left.

More than likely the service order. If you go to System Preferences > Network, Then unlock the pad lock (bottom left) then click the gear icon next to the + and -. You should then see an option to Set Service Order... just drag the ethernet adapter above the wifi and just click OK and then Apply.
