Mac network shares disappearing.

Good morning all.

I am experiencing weird behavior from my Mac OSX server.

There is a mirrored RAID that holds a group of various shared folders over the network. Normally it works fine but occassionally the Mac client users complain that they can't see the contents of the folders.

From the server side the folders report that they are empty and hold no data.

This is fixed by restarting the server.

In a possibly linked scenario, last night I was accessing the same shares via my ubuntu desktop and Vista Laptop and about 5 folders within the share claimed to be empty(note not all folders claimed to be empty).

I freaked out thinking someone had carelessly deleted the work. But server side the folders were fully populated and appeared normal.

Once again a restart fixed the problem.


My Mac experience is not as great as I would like it to be.

Over the years I have experienced the same.

It really depends on the hardware you are using for the RAID.

I have had terrible experience with BUFFALO products.

My current one is an Infrant solution (I believe they were bought out by Netgear).

I also have an Airport Extreme and I have attached USB drives to it. Works fine.

You can attach a USB hardware RAID to an Airport station (I am thinking DROBO; which I do not have).

Hey zippy. I am not sure if it is hardware or software RAID. But you may be onto something as I just had the problem reappear and when attempting to copy a file into the drive i get a read write error -36.

Which when I google has something to do with input/output.... Maybe the RAID driver/chip is freezing up or something.

Any ideas anyone?
