I have always been a pc guy and quite honestly a mac hater. Why have I been a mac hater well.... who knows I had never even used one. Well I went into BestBuy and decided to go check one out as I love the Itouch and fell in love. The only problem is I dont have a lot of money So i purchased a refurb current gen imac 20" 2.0ghz with 4 gigs of memory. I wanted to know if this was a good choice. Is this going to be pretty fast for me? I found these forums after I ordered but thought I would still ask.

I will be wanting to make home movie dvd's, edit pictures, surf the net and play wow ect...

Thanks in advance and I look

Hi,

welcome to the Mac platform! For the things you want to do, your iMac is perfect (especially when you got a good deal on it).

4GB RAM will do a nice job for you.

The hardware will be good for a number of years to come (you don't need to buy a new computer as you upgrade your operating system).

Enjoy!

/Rupert

Ram question

The one question I have is the bestbuy guy told me to get buffered memory for the mac pro for my imac so I ordered buffered memmory. Is there a big difference in buffered vs regular memory? It was only 120 from newegg so I figured why not.

The mac pro and iMac dont use the same memory. Dont you love it when "experts" tell you what to do? Probably should go ahead and cancel that order.

You can get 4gb of ram for the iMac from any number of places, ranging in price from $70-90.

As far a buffered vs unbuffered, no idea.

edit - btw, I got a refurbed 20" several weeks ago. It was my 2nd mac and Im very happy with it. I put 4gbs in it and have no complaints.

edit 2 - the ram you want is notebook ram, PC5300 DDR2 667MHz DIMM. This is what I got, but there are many brands out there, even at newegg

Thank you so much for you help. I would have been dissapointed when the wrong chip arrived. I just hope newegg is cool about returning it.

So i noticed this morning mac dropped the price on the computer I just ordered. That kinda sucks since it wont even arrive until thursday, talk about bad timing.

I have read on here that sometimes you get something better than advertised on refurbs, what are the chances of that as it would soften the blow?

Well I called apple and they were very nice and refunded the difference now that's awesome. I'm still curious about the refubs coming with better specs than listed though.

Good for you for taking the initiative and calling Apple without waiting for a response from people here. That's the right thing to do. I'm also glad to hear that the Apple rep was willing to refund the difference. Good customer service.

As for freebies on refurbs, they occasionally happen. The most typical seems to be a RAM upgrade, receiving more RAM than was listed the specs. Don't expect it to happen, but it's a nice bonus when it does.

Hey, I just replied to this in another thread. I said you can get the difference in price refunded, but I see you already did :)

As far as getting something better than you paid for (more ram, bigger hdd), Ive bought 3 refurbed macs and so far have only gotten the specs that were listed. However, seem alot of ppl here get extras they didnt expect.

Screens for 24"

I just called Apple and was told that the screens for the new 24" iMacs were the identical ones from the previous generation 24" iMacs.

Can anyone verify this?

actually i had the old ones and i just got the new one, i kinda think the new 24inch ones are better. maybe its psychological...
