Today I popped in a DVD and now Mac OS says no external drive found. Glad I still have my old Monterey on my MBA 2017, plugged it in and it reads it fine. It did read fine on my iMac M3 running 14.2.1. After the update it can't read it anymore. Any though or anyone experience this using external DVD player on iMac M3 Sonoma 14.3.1?

My old Superdrive doesn't work on 14.3.1 either. Plugged it into an old MBA running Catalina and it works fine.
It's these quirks that scares me when updating Mac OS. lol It's a good thing I kept that old MBA around and will never get rid of it! Just in case. ;)

My USB Apple SuperDrive works fine w/ Sonoma 14.3.1 plugged directly into my 2019 Intel MBP. I'm using an Anker USB-C to USB-A adapter. One of the itty, bitty ones w/out cable. System Report below -

Apple USB SuperDrive:
Product ID: 0x1500
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 2.02
Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxx
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/s
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Location ID: 0x14100000 / 1
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 600

I have a suspicion your ports may not be providing enough power.

The drive i used has usb power using Apple 12 usb power adaptor. System report doesn’t even see it on my iMac M3. But as i mentioned before it worked fine with previous Sonoma before the last update. Your post help me solve it. I’m also using those little Anker connector. So i took it out and used the Apple USB-C to USB-A adaptor. Now it works and reads it. Apple must have changed something in Sonoma because it has worked with the little connectors since I bought the iMac in Dec 2023. I bought those little connectors along with Apple branded ones.

OP:

What brand is your external DVD burner?

REASON WHY I'm asking:
Saw this posted at Pioneer's site for their new optical drives:
"Pioneer optical drives are not recognized by macOS Ventura 13.2, released by Apple on January 23, 2023.
This can be resolved by updating to macOS Ventura 13.2.1, released on February 13, or a newer version."

I realize the above warning was for an earlier version of the OS.

But I'm wondering if the latest OS releases from Apple are messing with [some] optical drives again...?

It's one of those cheap brands on Amazon I bought in 2018. Brand is "Epartsdom" They don't sell them anymore. Yes, I think Apple is getting more strict with what connects to the Mac.

Good thing I have the Apple Branded USB-C to USB-A Dongle as a backup. I think I better order a couple more for both my wife and I. Seems like Apple is getting anal with these adaptors connecting to the computers. I liked those little Anker connectors vs the Dongle from Apple, but I gotta use them from now on.

Which iMac? M1 or M3?
M2 Mac Mini.

UPDATE. When I tested it yesterday I plugged it into my Xcellon USB A hub and Caldigit USB C/TB hub and neither worked. Today I tried it plugging directly into the Mini and it worked as did plugging into the ancient 24" Cinema Display I use. The display was what it was plugged into before I upgraded my 2012 Mini last year. Since I never use the drive I didn't bother hooking it up on the new Mini.

Ok so what your saying it like me? It only works when plugged in directly to the Mac itself or the Apple Cinema Display USB ports. Using a 3rd party HUB or connector won't work right?

I just purchased an Apple SuperDrive to use with my Mac Studio. It is only going to be used to transcribe audio CD's to it. I have a protective case coming with it. I order long out of print CD's from DisCogs most all of them either were never released in the states or are not any of the streaming services. It will be stored in its case between these uses.

Thanks for mentioning "DisCogs". I've never heard of it and will explore this page for old out of print CD's.

DisCogs is a real treasure. Be sure to load the App. One of the cool things the app has is a barcode scanner. When you are going through used CD's and LP's you can read the bar codes and it will bring up the data on the release. Some of the releases especially Records can be worth 100's of Dollars.

Returning to the topic of this thread. The only weirdness I experienced with the Superdrive was The Mac Studio would not except it being plugged into my fully powered OWC Thunderbolt dock. It told me it needed to be plugged into the Mac for power.

You'll need to install the Dock Ejector app to enable high power USB mode to support the Super Drive. Which dock are you using as well? Depending on the dock, some of the ports provide a higher power output that is required by the Super drive to work.

OWC 11-Port Thunderbolt Dock ports 15 watts, up to 2 amps.

https://eshop.macsales.com/software/dock-ejector (the driver is bundled in Dock Ejector)

"To enable support for the Apple SuperDrive, the Apple USB keyboard, and iPad 1/2/3 charging, please install the driver. Note: you must also connect this drive to the high powered USB port on the rear of the dock."
