I've forgotten all I ever knew about fixing OS 9. And it feels good!
But if you haven't forgotten, I'd appreciate advice on two things for my grandmother's indigo iMac:
1. I've re-installed OS 9.1 from the original Software Restore disc, using the "Restore in Place" option. (NOT the option that keeps a copy of your old system files.) It said it would reinstall the OS, pre-installed apps, AND factory settings. But then, after the Welcome Assistant was done, all her old settings like desktop pic and font sizes were unchanged. I'm not sure if anything was truly reset or not. Is there any way to REALLY restore factory system settings without erasing the whole HD? I want to keep her files but re-install the OS.
2. What can I try to fix her Internet connection? With ANY browser (even AFTER deleting prefs), her connection is now VERY slow (this started BEFORE I tried the Restore, but that didn't help). And both Navigator and Explorer tend to generate errors about "socket connection" and/or simply quit unexpectedly. Web pages start to load, but they never get very far. A few images maybe--so there is SOME connection.
I've tried a different computer with her same ISP--it's fine. I've re-done her Internet and Remote Access settings by hand. I've deleted her browser prefs and cleared her caches. I've zapped her PRAM and rebuilt her desktop DB.
Nothing helps. Hardware Test and a disk check reveal no problems. All other usage of the computer is fine--even email apparently. But Web browsing is shot. Is there anything I have not tried? Any specific system prefs files I should try deleting?
Thanks in advance!
