Purgeable space is space that can be released if needed by the OS - Photos and documents stored in iCloud, etc, so it's not necessarily a problem if it's increasing

See mine seems to have a problem because it keeps increasing and I keep getting reports of low disk space (which is stopping things like downloads using Transmission).

I'm now at 1GB free space 40GB purgeable!

Don't forget Transmission reserves storage space for torrents. For example you're downloading a 20GB torrent but have only downloaded 5GB so far, the space used will be 20GB not 5GB

the purgeable space problem doesn't make sense as my icloud storage is only 40mb and i don't store anything in my mac still the purgeable space keeps in increasing(now about 1GB). Everybody i ask says that os will remove it automatically which hasn't work for any of other mac users as far as i know .....i think this is a deliberate way for apple to buy new HD every time your existing HD is full.

I think if Apple wanted people to get bigger HDs, they wouldn't make the base model of all their portables only 128 GB. As a poster said above, the purgeable stuff is stuff that CAN be moved to iCloud if need be in case the HD gets too full. So once you get to a certain point, Sierra will automatically move stuff to iCloud. I'm sure this is stuff like photos and videos, etc. I have a 275 GB SSD with 18 GB purgeable, but I still have about 180 GB free on the SSD, so I'm not up against the wall yet so to speak.

Check for files in Library/Containers/com.apple.notes. On my system, after I turned on Desktop and Documents in iCloud, it dropped 40G of files into the container for notes, and when I found them and deleted them (found them via Daisy Disk). then I turned off Desktop and Documents in iCloud but the files started repopulating as soon as Notes in Icloud was turned on. My documents folder is nowhere near 40G and my desktop is almost all aliases. My iphone also received this "gift", occupying tens of gigabytes on the iphone, basically making it unusable. I have reported this to Apple as a bug in either 10.12 or IOS 10 or both, but I have had to turn off Notes in Cloud in order to avoid the problem.

Maybe you wanna try this.

1. Remove local Time Machine backup. Source here, look for answer from username HevvyD
a. Open terminal
b. Type "df -h". This will show you a volume of MobileBackups if it was enabled and if this does apply to your system.
c. To disable your Mobile Backup, type "sudo tmutil disablelocal". When prompted for password then type in your password.
d. Check your Storage and see that the purgeable space has been deleted plus the System section has also shrunk to just contain the OSX.

2. Using tricky partition. Source here
3. Disable Optimized Storage feature.

I've already using no.3 but no luck.
