I've been having continuing problems with certain apps related to music production on Mac OS Sonoma.
DAW's run fine, but some plugin managers like UVI Workstation and iLok licence manager continue to have problems

I'm running the latest version of Sonoma (14.2.1 on a 14" Macbook Pro M1 with 32Gb of RAM) but still no solution. Both iLok and UVI workstation just bounce in the dock and never open. After deleting them (with CleanMyMacX) and after meticulously navigating through every folder on my Mac and removing every trace of said apps (also in the 'hidden' library folder), I reboot and reinstall the apps. Then, they work just fine, but only once.
I then keep on doing what I always do, check mail, browse the web and work using different apps. Later, when I want to launch either UVI Workstation or iLok once again, they refuse to open, without deleting or installing any other apps (and of course, UVI Workstation won't open as a VST plugin in any DAW, either).

This is very strange behaviour and I have no clue how to solve it. I've run Onyx and cleaned up everything I could, but still no go.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?

I've been having my eye on a Mac Mini M2 Pro to use it just for music production but if these problems continue, I think I'd be better off just building a PC for my music production needs. Everything worked fine on Ventura but after several updates to Sonoma, things don't seem to get better...

not sure about UVI, but ilok should be fine. contact the UVI people for help; also, there are files that spotlight cannot find, you could try an app like find any file to do a deeper search (plus, sigh, there are probably ilok files that can't be removed without disabling SIP, rebooting, deleting the file, re-enabling SIP, rebooting. fun stuff!

you could contact ilok as well for help. there might be official uninstallers to run, the re-install those apps. but again, check with both developers...

Not a UVI user so can't comment on that. iLok, third-party plugins and LPX all solid here. M1 Studio Ultra, Sonoma 14.2.1. Good luck!

FWIW; I got a M2 Pro Mini a few weeks ago. It came with Ventura.
I tried it for two weeks with sonoma 14.2 and protools, ilok and most things worked fine. Excellent machine. Had some other problems, none of the new features were too exciting, so I'm back on Ventura. All good.

Yeah, it can be a bit of a dog for pro audio, or anything pro-3rd party ... but then, this is nothing unusual from Apple in recent times eh? [shareholders, first, staff second, customers last]. Rant over.

FWIW, i get much much better results from Monterey on this mac pro. All the drivers work, everything works. Sonoma in particular has all these strange bits, like for example, doing some updates on Monterey, all progressed smoothly and with various windows prompts etc en route. These same processes on Sonoma simply miss out on those prompts, sometimes hang & even require a force quit on the installer.

I also went through four days of support interaction with OWC /Softraid & which simply would not update correctly on Sonoma (drivers again), but worked perfecly as it should on Monterery. Net result: everything was updated on Monterey, then I cloned it, then updated it to Sonoma & all is resolved ... for now. PITA. Waste of life.

What Apple wants is that you run Logic and Final Cut. That's it. Mind you, Logic does come ridiculouly well equipped with plugins, VIs, virtual library & only needs to be bought once. Still, doesn't help those of us who need to work in the real world & need to mix ProTools or Nuendo projects for example.

Another thought would be to get onto UVI support about this; in my experience they haven't been the sharpest kinds on the block when it comes to this kind of thing (like their stablemates in MOTU). The iLok issue seems a bit more telling. I have no such issues with that one on Itel CPUs & it is meant to natively support Apple Silicon & so this likely points to a local issue. Hard to tell 'where' the machine came from & how it may have been updated over time, but:

So in sum:
  • you 'could' try rolling back to the OS that shipped with your MB Pro M1 (Monterey?). Install & update everything and check for good working order. Then maybe just leave that alone? Do any of us really need Sonoma? Or if you must, then update to Sonoma. Keep two boot disks, use Carbon Copy Cloner.
  • Or, zero the boot disk, install a clean Sonoma, install every latest third party item from scratch.
In fact, this is the usual answer from any so-called 'Apple Genius' when it comes down to it & the going gets tough, and after they make you jump through a million hoops first. Then 'Reinstall the OS'. Yeah, sure ...

'If operating systems were airlines':

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, stewardesses, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look the same, act the same, and talk the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are told you don’t need to know, don’t want to know, and would you please return to your seat and watch the movie.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Linux Airlines

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, “You had to do what with the seat?”

Seems to me a rule of audio production on the Mac should be:
Don't upgrade the OS until you KNOW that everything you have will work with the newer OS.

How does one discover this?
By TESTING using an "alternate/experimental" drive with the new OS on it BEFORE you "commit yourself" by installing the OS upgrade onto your "main" drive.

I sense that many pro audio guys try to stay at least "one OS generation back" to ensure that they don't run into problems like the OP's above...

Funny, this... :D

I deleted iLok and UVI Workstation from my system using AppCleaner this time, then reinstalled both apps and everything seems fine now, for the time being.
Bizarre, in any case.

Thanks for the feedback !

One thing that may be helpful as well when dealing with iLok, is to make sure that the “PACE license support” box is checked under login items in system prefs. I use Neural DSP plugins that require iLok as well, and if I uncheck that background process, I can get software errors or apps just bouncing in the dock.

Will do that.
But the only information I can give them are the specs of my Mac and OS version. On their respective sites it says their apps work with Sonoma. Most people running Sonoma don’t have any problems, either, judging from several forums.

Fingers crossed, I suppose, that’s about all I can do at this stage…

they should be able to, at least, suggest some troubleshooting tips. come back here if you need more help, this is a great community!

Still no solution. I'm exchanging mails with UVI support but so far no answer as to what the problem could be.

The apps work on Sonoma, that's for sure. Only, I have to uninstall them, using either AppCleaner or CleanMyMac, then reinstall them, and then they work, no problem.
The moment I reboot, however, then UVI Workstation and iLok won't launch, and just keep bouncing in the dock.

I've tried disabling all apps that run in the background (CleanMyMac, Settapp, iStatMenus, etc), all to no avail.
Guess I'll just stop using the Mac for music production and use my desktop PC, no problems whatsoever there...

Did that already, no change...
then you're the only one, and something's up with your setup. perhaps try creating a test admin account on your mac, and signing in to that, and seeing how things work in logic. this will at least tell you if the problem is global, or just related to your account.

hope you get this sorted out!

Already tried creating a new admin account, didn't help either.

However, I've managed to narrow it down to the Pace security files from iLok.
To get both UVI Workstation and iLok working after a reboot, I don't need to erase them and reinstall everything (contrarily to what I thought before) but I need to use the iLok standalone installer, reinstall only the Pace License service and Activation Experience (using a custom install, deselecting the iLok application), and then both UVI workstation and iLok work.
Of course, after a reboot, everything's gone to the dogs again and I have to repeat the procedure.

It's a workaround, of course, and only takes a minute, but it's still a really annoying workaround and I'd rather avoid having to resort to it.
So, something must happen to those Pace files at reboot, I don't know what.

I've attached a few screenshots of the iLok installer to clarify.

i would torture pace about this, it's not normal behavior. and for now, glad you at least have a workaround.

It's bizarre that UVI Workstation works as it should after just installing those pace files. You'd think that iLok is not directly related to UVI Workstation but there must be some link somewhere.

Also, when you first install UVI Portal (not Workstation), the installer also installs iLok. So maybe there's the link.
In any case, not normal behaviour in any way.

I've also added this 'workaround' to my discussion with UVI support. Curious about what they will come up with...

Sigh...
UVI support suggested temporarily deactivating CleanMyMacX, which I did, but that didn't help.
I dug a little deeper on Google and found someone with a similar problem and a complete uninstall of CleanMyMac did the trick.

So, I did the same and lo and behold, iLok and UVI Workstation are purring like kittens...
If only I had realized sooner...

I think you have a conflict between UVI and iLok - have you tried installing just UVI and rebooting to see if there is a conflict? Or you could install iLok and not UVI and see if there is a problem
