I've been having continuing problems with certain apps related to music production on Mac OS Sonoma.
DAW's run fine, but some plugin managers like UVI Workstation and iLok licence manager continue to have problems
I'm running the latest version of Sonoma (14.2.1 on a 14" Macbook Pro M1 with 32Gb of RAM) but still no solution. Both iLok and UVI workstation just bounce in the dock and never open. After deleting them (with CleanMyMacX) and after meticulously navigating through every folder on my Mac and removing every trace of said apps (also in the 'hidden' library folder), I reboot and reinstall the apps. Then, they work just fine, but only once.
I then keep on doing what I always do, check mail, browse the web and work using different apps. Later, when I want to launch either UVI Workstation or iLok once again, they refuse to open, without deleting or installing any other apps (and of course, UVI Workstation won't open as a VST plugin in any DAW, either).
This is very strange behaviour and I have no clue how to solve it. I've run Onyx and cleaned up everything I could, but still no go.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
I've been having my eye on a Mac Mini M2 Pro to use it just for music production but if these problems continue, I think I'd be better off just building a PC for my music production needs. Everything worked fine on Ventura but after several updates to Sonoma, things don't seem to get better...

Yeah, it can be a bit of a dog for pro audio, or anything pro-3rd party ... but then, this is nothing unusual from Apple in recent times eh? [shareholders, first, staff second, customers last]. Rant over.
FWIW, i get much much better results from Monterey on this mac pro. All the drivers work, everything works. Sonoma in particular has all these strange bits, like for example, doing some updates on Monterey, all progressed smoothly and with various windows prompts etc en route. These same processes on Sonoma simply miss out on those prompts, sometimes hang & even require a force quit on the installer.
I also went through four days of support interaction with OWC /Softraid & which simply would not update correctly on Sonoma (drivers again), but worked perfecly as it should on Monterery. Net result: everything was updated on Monterey, then I cloned it, then updated it to Sonoma & all is resolved ... for now. PITA. Waste of life.
What Apple wants is that you run Logic and Final Cut. That's it. Mind you, Logic does come ridiculouly well equipped with plugins, VIs, virtual library & only needs to be bought once. Still, doesn't help those of us who need to work in the real world & need to mix ProTools or Nuendo projects for example.
Another thought would be to get onto UVI support about this; in my experience they haven't been the sharpest kinds on the block when it comes to this kind of thing (like their stablemates in MOTU). The iLok issue seems a bit more telling. I have no such issues with that one on Itel CPUs & it is meant to natively support Apple Silicon & so this likely points to a local issue. Hard to tell 'where' the machine came from & how it may have been updated over time, but:
So in sum:
- you 'could' try rolling back to the OS that shipped with your MB Pro M1 (Monterey?). Install & update everything and check for good working order. Then maybe just leave that alone? Do any of us really need Sonoma? Or if you must, then update to Sonoma. Keep two boot disks, use Carbon Copy Cloner.
- Or, zero the boot disk, install a clean Sonoma, install every latest third party item from scratch.
In fact, this is the usual answer from any so-called 'Apple Genius' when it comes down to it & the going gets tough, and after they make you jump through a million hoops first. Then 'Reinstall the OS'. Yeah, sure ...
'If operating systems were airlines':
Mac Airlines
All the stewards, stewardesses, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look the same, act the same, and talk the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are told you don’t need to know, don’t want to know, and would you please return to your seat and watch the movie.
Windows Air
The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.
Linux Airlines
Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, “You had to do what with the seat?”
