How is it that a guy in Austrailia can get a hold of a yet unreleased OS X version, but we can't find a guy to tell is fore sure if there is a new PB being produced(and when its due out!)...... Surely someone works for Apple or Moto and knows whats going on!

Yes, we have a milestone! We are at 10.2.2, which is one full OS ahead of 9.2.2, the last update for Classic OS ever! We are also at a double 2, which has only happened in OS's 10, and 9. There was no 8.2, 7.2, or as far as I know a 6.2.
So that's pretty much the citch here. One thing, though, I think that we may have one more milestone when the releases comes out... maybe... oh... hmmmm... there would be a major revision of an application, which barely ever happens in an blah.blah.x (the number after the second decimal point). I am hoping ichat!
actually, i just thought of something i should clear up. I didn't mean anything like iTunes 3.0.1 came out with 10.2.1, I meant like if it were iTunes 3.5 or somethign like that, I am hoping for a revised iChat... please god!
I am not a computer nor software engineer, so could someone please explain how they decide if a piece of software gets a X.x.1 vs X.1 update designate?
I don't know either, I think they make it up as they go along. Some companies have guidelines. Like this version of 10.2.2 that's out now... it is release 6F6. There will be many diff versions of it, but they don't do 10.2.2.1.2.0.3.6.8. Get it? I dont' either, so don't worry!
x.0 - really big update (or total revision)
x.1 - usually not groundbreaking, but includes new features
x.x.1 - usually bug fixes and small improvements
Mac OS X is a bit different tho. x.1 updates are usually big updates, with many new features (10.1, 10.2), while x.x.1 versions is usually small improvements, sometimes with new features (Quartz rendering for carbon-apps in 10.1.5)...
The build number is for beta-testing...

Not necessarily beta testing. The retail version of 10.2 had a build # associated with it. Apple uses a different letter for each build string, like 10.2.2 uses 6fx. It's just used to keep track of build progression. It also makes it easier for troubleshooting. You can ask the person over the phone to check what build # they have on their computer and it will tell you what updaters they have installed.
I would say more closer to 6 weeks. Usually the developers test for 3 weeks, then Apple makes inprovements based on the suggestions of developers. Those improvements usually take another 3 weeks. I say the update will be available in early November.

Version numbers depend on a lot of things: severity, features, and the marketing department.
10.2.2 has minor fixes so it wouldn't be enough to rate 10.3. Generally, it only gets to a .0 release when they've exhausted that number column or they have significant changes.
I don't care exactly WHEN 10.2.2 will be out, but I would like to know WHAT changes are in it. Does anyone have any news on that?
