Although it appeared that Apple was close to wrapping up development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 late last week, a new pre-release distribution of the software was dropped on developers Wednesday afternoon with a handful of additional tweaks added to mix.
Most notably, Apple has included a new round of "Bluetooth compatibility and stability fixes" in the latest beta, labeled Mac OS X 10.5.7 build 9J56, according to people familiar with the software.
A number of recent Mac mini purchasers have complained about intermittent Bluetooth connection problems (1, 2) on their new systems, though similar problems are believed to be plaguing a variety of Macs."
I am now too the proud owner of a new iMac 24" (since two weeks) and during this time my bluetooth connection failed three times. As I have both the bluetooth mouse and keyboard, the only way I can re-connect is to put the machine to sleep via the start button and then to wake it up again via the same method. Bluetooth is then re-connected. Works on my nerves but I am prepared to live with it for the moment, as it now seems from the above that Apple is working on this issue, and hopefully a fix is in the process and should then be available shortly with the 10.5.7 update.
Other than this I have no complaints what so ever with my new mac. I have none of the problems some seem to be experiencing, judging by the contributions on this forum.
Fot those of you meaning to order a new iMac and who are unsure if you should or not, based on what you read in this forum, I would like to give you the following advice which is something that I have learned from my experience with Linux.
About a year ago I decided to get rid of Windows altogether on my computer and was looking for a new OS. I decided to change to Linux Ubuntu. I downloaded it from the Ubuntu homepage, installed it, and was very happy with the results. I had no problems and no issues except some teething problems to connect the WiFi. Everything worked "out of the box" and over the last year since installing it, it is running absolutely stable and I have had no problems at all.
The point is however, since after I have installed Linux I started visiting the Ubuntu forums and every new thread is about some problem or other people are experiencing with Linux. Had I visited the forum before my decission to install the OS, I would probably never have done it. I would have said to myself that I do not need those problems and probably would never have installed Ubuntu. I still use this OS on my laptop and love it.
This time round I made the mistake of visiting this and other forums discussing Apple machines prior to placing my order. After reading about all of the problems users experience with the new iMacs I was on the point of changing my mind about buying the iMac. The truth is that some people do have problems but my quess is that this is a relatively small number. Apple sold 2,5 million computers in the last quarter and the vast majoruty of those have no problems. On forums like these people only report problems, so that is all that one sees. The millions that do not have problems do not take the time and do not have the motivation, nor the need to post here.
I can only say that I am very happy with my new iMac, and I am sure the small issue with the bluetooth connection will be resolved shortly, and if you should be one of those few unlucky buyers who happens to get a machine with some problems, then exchange it. Chances are however that your machine will be just fine, as mine is, and you will be very happy with your mac. I surely am.
