Yeah, they're called restore discs for a reason.
so you don't have to install them when you first get your mac????
Speaking of these discs....Did anyone else notice or think that the DVD's Apple includes are made of really thick plastic? They seem to be a much heavier duty disc than I am used to handling. They work fine but I just thought this was interesting. No, the OS is already installed. All they are for is, like Yellow said, to reinstall the OS for various reasons
Why do you need an OS disc? Well if your PC dies you're forced to by Windows all over again. If your Mac dies or you want to reinstall or for whatever reason, you can reinstall because you have the discs.
Sounds like you're coming from a Windows world. Unlike over there where a new computer doesn't come with your Windows disc (it should because you've bought a license), Apple gives you a disc that can not only restore but reinstall as well.

Tiger disc doesn't include software like iLife etc.
"Restore discs" works only with computer model what they were shipped with.
If we buy the new macosx version how do i install ilife then?

Yes they are.
My C2D iMac never came with any Restore discs.
There where 2 DVD's.
Disc 1 - INSTALL 1 - OS INSTALL
Disc 2 - INSTALL 2 - ADDITIONAL APPS (Garageband, iDVD, etc...)
OS install is a restore cd
