Mac OS X Finder Question

Hey,

I want some help with something that should be really easy i just dont know how to do it. So on all my friends laptops and desktops (osx of course) when you insert a cd or attach an external HDD the icon for it shows up right below the main HD (effectivly moving all of the icons on his/her desktop down a slot). When i attach my external HDD or put in a CD it just goes below everything. How do i make it show up right below my main HD?

They probably have their desktops set to auto arrange

in the Finder, go to View>Show View Options

Click "Keep Arranged By" and then select "Kind" from the pop-up menu...that should do it.
