zim said:Simply select the folder, file, drive, etc... and then Get Info on it (apple key + I or from the finder menu go to File > Get Info). You will also want to do the same to the icon that you wish to apple. Once you have both info windows up simply select the new icon, from the upper left, copy it with Edit > Copy or apple key + c and then select the other info window and paste.
Check out Pixadex from iconfactory.com to keep all your icons sorted.

Interfacelift.com gives instructions on using terminal to change the system bezels, which are not easly changed. It also gives links to shareware that will help you change a png (the supposed modern replacement for gifs) into a usable Mac OSX icon.
Just about any picture can also become an icon. Select, Copy to clipboard, select icon, get info, select icon preview, paste.
