Mac OS X Panther & Tiger

New mac user getting a 12'' PB monday.
I'm getting model before latest one, but for the price of the latest ones. This was fine, except i thought about it, and the system software is different.

Is there any differences between
Mac OS X v10.3 Panther and
Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger?
If so what are they?

Are there differences? Yes. Mainly in features and some stability. I'm still running Panther here at home and on all the work machines so it's not super-critical to have it.

Most of the changes are "under the hood."

10.4 most notably has Spotlight and Dashboard.

IIRC, in 10.3, Exposé was introduced, so you'll have it with whichever you decide to get.

I find Spotlight to be infinitely useful (I can just dump all my school work into one folder and search for it if I need it again. Very nice. I love it!)

If I were you, I'd just get the latest one... you'd get the price decrease, Superdrive, AND Tiger, instead of Panther.

yeah getting it for the same price of the new one, so saving couple of hundred, as well as 200 off for student discount. around 400 or something total.

so it is probably best to wait and get the new one then yes? is there anything wrong with panther, or is it just best to have tiger cause it will last longer as its latest?

with spotlight thing, i'll more than likely have things sorted into labelled folders etc.
would that be the same as the search function in xp, search for files in c: for example?

No. Let me clarify...

We have 6 production machines running OS 10.3.4 at the office. These all play extremely nicely with all of our apps... I get my day's work done with no problems at all.

If you really want Tiger, then you can pay for it separately later or if you can be bothered waiting, then OS 10.5 is about 18 months away at most.

Tiger should not be a deal-maker unlike the hardware configuration of your Mac.

As i'll get it on monday, won't have to wait two weeks for new shipment to come in (to Australia) and system software is about the same.

I'm running Panther 10.3.9. It is very stable on my Mac.

I've been running both Tiger and Panther while there are feature differences - they are 99.9% identical in look and feel.

Bottom line is if you desire a more stable and flaw less experience stick with Panther ----- Tiger is still working the bugs out of itself and its execution of standard applications
