MAC OS X Server Volume Shares

Hi there,

I am attempting to configure a shared volume on MAC OS X server, but I’m running into all kinds of issues, allow me to explain my domain first.

It’s a standard windows 2008 R2 domain that has an extended schema to support the use of workgroup manager.

I have partitioned the MAC HDD into two partitions, lets call it CAPE and SERVER and I want to share CAPE with all the students.

I popped onto Server Admin - > Volumes and created a share and attempted to share it via auto mounting ensuring that I had moved the “group” students into the permissions. This didn’t work (claimed my password was incorrect at the point of authentication, I obviously know that is is).

I then turned to one of the networked macs and attempted to connect via afp, although it allows me to connect using the servers admin account, it wont let me connect using any of the test student accounts.

I’m just at an utter loss, it seems to be a permission issue, but I cannot seem to find it. It might be that I am trying to connect to the server and then to one of its volumes, but surely that’s how I am meant to connect?

Sorry guys, any help is really appreciated, I’m at my wits end!

Server Admin->Your Server->Access tab

Make sure your groups have access to the services there.

I work in a school with around 80 macs and 500 windows machines, do you think a Mac Mini in server config would be ok for managing the macs via workgroup manager (extended AD schema)?

Im worried it might not have enough horsepower.

I would avoid it. OS X server is pretty lousy even for a Mac only network.

I would recommend using a linux server running Netatalk and Samba/NIS.

I'm currently in a situation similar to yours, though I only manage about 40 Macs that dual boot Mac OS X and Windows 7, and someone else manages the hundreds of Windows machines in our domain.

I have a Mac mini on our server rack, and it's worked out pretty well so far. I use it for hosting augmented user records (our AD admin won't extend the schema), serving files via AFP/NFS/SMB, controlling an XGrid and hosting NetInstall/NetRestore images. Having a Mac OS X Server around has made the task of managing Mac systems much easier.

I can't recommend the current Core 2 Mac mini, though. The 2.5" hard drives don't perform very well, and the CPU doesn't keep up when under heavy load. By heavy load, I mean serving NetBoot to multiple clients at once, controlling the XGrid and serving files. The inevitable update to the mini with an i5/i7 and Thunderbolt for external drive connectivity will make it a true contender as a general purpose server, however. Good luck!
