Mac OSX does not support USB audio?

i was getting a Xitel usb connector that would connect my tibook with my minidisc, but on the Xitel site they say:

"please note: Mac OSX does not support USB audio at this point, therefore no USB audio device such as the DG2 will be supported by OSX until Apple upgrades OSX"

are Xitel talking about a pre x.1.3.1 version or is it still like this? from what i heard mac os is supposed to detect any usb in/out audio connected... no?

secondly i wonder what is a cheap but good way to get audio from, like a turntable or something into a tibook? there is no audio in and i don't know about buying an external soundcard, is there a connector like the Xitel for minidisc that i can just connect my preamp to?

Does not support usb audio?? Does that mean when I get my Digidesign Mbox that I will have to use it with os 9 only? I quess that I would have had to considering that ProTools isn't OS X native yet.

Dazzle has a USB input device for $70 that will do video and sound, but I don't know if that will work for OS X.

Ummmmm..... tell that to my USB Plantronics headset. That sound coming out of my earphones seems to suggest otherwise. Incidentally, when you do tell that to the headset, it will also dutifully pass your comments to my TiBook through the microphone.

I believe Xitel is probably engaging in a business practice commonly called "lying to you," perhaps a specific variety known as "blaming someone else for the shortcomings of one's own product."

i would suggest emailing these punks (Xitel) and tell them that you have a number of usb audio products that work in OSX and ask them what their comment is supposed to mean since ity is not true for other companies' products. let them know you woudl be more than happy to spend your money on their product but you are concerned that Xitel hasnt been able to create a usb audio product for OSX while other companies have.

I can't speak for USB audio input, but USB audio out has worked since the Public Beta.. (So Sayeth my Harman/Kardon SoundSticks) which I have used on 2 iMacs (G3 & G4), 2 G4 towers, a G3 powerbook, and a G4 powerbook.

So I kinda have to side with the folks who have said that someone is lying to you.

I do not know why OSX feels like Windows 95. I mean, OSX basictly is a very good beta testing.

Apple has putting a side the audio features for a long time (crappy quictime instruments, no good i/o converters, no audio imput since G4 400).

Be carefull when getting an audio device, not all of them are compatible with every software.

Hey dude, get the Protools tool box with the new usb interface, is $500 but is worth it, specially is you are gonna masterize from a turntable recording.

OS X 10.1.3 supports stereo in/out on a system level. That means, a USB device that registers as "USB Audio" (e.g. Griffin iMic) works perfectly well. There are, of course, USB devices like the Roland interface that do multi-channel-I/O. They need a dedicated driver which might not be ported to OS X yet.
