hello, i have bought this used mac pro to replace my g5 but i have a problem..

it's a 2009 model 2.66 quad.
when i connect my audio interface ( apogee duet firewire ) there is a high pitch noise coming from the tower.. its really annoying to my ears.. i looked around and found mac pro audio update 1.1 but its only for snow leopard.. is there anything i can do ? or i am doomed with this.. i miss my old g5..

i use osx 10.10.1..
i also downloaded the latest drivers for yosemite from apogee website..

not sure what is the cause of the problem.. the sound come from the cpu block in the bottom..

I wish I could help you, but... you might consider posing the same question in the Digital Audio forum on macrumors. When I was setting up an amateur recording 'studio' with my Mac Pro 5,1, I found the users of that forum to be extremely helpful.

I had some trouble with my 5.1 and FireWire audio. It turned out that my device was designed for fw400 and the fw800 ports didn't get along well. After trying several different cables and adapter, I finally found one that worked.

Could something like this be affecting you too?

i installed snow leopard and the problem is not there.. so i guess it's something to do with yosemite.. too bad i liked the new interface.. i wish i could try mavericks but it seem impossible to download now..

*i did find a way to install mavericks.. same problem than yosemite.. well it seem that computer only work in snow leopard.. *

*maybe the new app nap things create the sound.. it seem.. the mac pro model 4,1 is too old for this *

At least you have eliminated hardware failure. It seems that support for this device may have been dropped. I haven't tried mine since installing Yosemite, but I do remember that in Mavericks, I had to go into MIDI settings to make it work. It was not Plug-N-Play.

didnt try this one.. do you use a apogee duet or any firewire audio interface ? i think mavericks and yosemite works well until i plug my apogee duet.. anyways, ill leave it at snow leopard for now..

MOTU via Firewire 400 PCIe card with TI chipset. No noise (except the noises I intentionally produce!)
