Alright, I'm new to the Mac world, I need some insight on a few things;

I just bought a Pro 1,1 for $100 (BSEL'd Octa-core w' 32gb full buffered ram), it's missing a side panel and all of the HDD bay caddy's; Are newer generation MP HDD caddy's compatible with my 1,1?

Also looking to flash a newer GPU (support for Metal), any recommendation(s) on a GPU? Is there a public download page for flashing/doing such things on my own?

I will be throwing down El Capitan when the final release goes public and Windows 10 under bootcamp, I'll be seeking for help with this in the near future.

Is there any other neat things I should know about this mac? I'm also proud owner of a maxed out G5 quad and DLSD 15.6" Al PB.

netkas.org is the place for GPU flashing.

DIY options for 1,1 are:
  • HD 5770 (no Metal)
  • HD 5850/5870 (no Metal)
  • HD 7770 (possible but not public, so it would need a bit of work)
  • HD 7850/7870 / R9 270X
  • HD 7950 / R9 280
  • HD 7970 / R9 280X

Thanks guys.

Another question; I don't have a flashed GPU as of yet, would a 7800gt from a powermac g5 work with this thing?

No, it has a PPC Firmware on it. Any PC video card will work though if you don't expect boot screens and you're already running a recent OS.

That's what I figured when I didn't see any screen. Currently don't have an OS or Mac based GPU, so I've been unable to do anything with it. I can install Yosemite/el cap via another another computer on a drive and swap the drive, correct? I know I need some kind of boot loader considering the system doesn't natively support past 10.7; is there a tutorial for this?

Here are threads for Yosemite and El Capitan.

Thanks for the links, I will be installing Yosemite for now!

Is there a thread for Bootcamp on the 1.1's? Iirc, it's not as easy to install/use on a 1.1 as the newer 3.1+?

EDIT: The pre-patched Piker Alpha for Yosemite seems to be corrupt, no matter how many times I re-download :(

I can confirm that the Apple version of the 7970 works on 1,1 AND 2,1.

Did you have to flashed the Apple 7970? I have a 2006 mac pro 1,1 running 10.10 with the apple 5770 gpu. I'm considering a new gpu, but I'm not willing to flash the card myself. Would installing an old pci vga card in one of the other pci slots for viewing the boot screen in addition to the non-flashed card work?
